Our Lady of Sorrows
"Woman of the New Covenant"

Solemnity for ASC
Memorial for CPPS

Saint Maria De Mattias’ devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows, as is clearly seen in her writings and the testimony of her companions, is intense and closely connected to her devotion to Jesus Christ crucified, the precious Cross, and the Blood of the New Covenant. During their XIII General Assembly (1979) the Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ promoted, within the Congregation, the commemoration of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15, with the title of “Woman of the New Covenant”. The Adorers of the Blood of Christ see in her an authentic model of a woman consecrated to God and to her sisters and brothers, fully dedicated to the Person and the saving work of Christ, Son of God and Son of the Virgin.

Homily Suggestions

In our distress, we call upon the Lord.

  1. For the Church, for the divisions among believers, may God and his sorrowful Mother give us broken hearts that lead us toward true and lasting reconciliation; we pray to the Lord.
  2. For victims of violence and natural disasters, may God and his sorrowful Mother shower them all with compassion; we pray to the Lord.
  3. For all who feel alone, abandoned or persecuted, may God and his sorrowful mother be with them in their time of distress; we pray to the Lord.
  4. For all those who work to alleviate the pain and sufferings of others, may God and his sorrowful mother bless them abundantly now and in the future; we pray to the Lord.
  5. For all who have died, may God and his sorrowful Mother welcome them into paradise; we pray to the Lord.

Father of mercies,
your Son, Jesus, felt compassion for his sorrowful Mother as she stood at the foot of the cross.

In that same compassion, hear and answer our prayers, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  1. The mother, in our first reading, was courageous, inspiring, broken-hearted, and above all faithful to the call of God in her life and the life of her children.
  2. The psalmist knows sorrow and pain, as well as hope in God.
  3. In the vision recounted in the second reading, the woman about to give birth is protected from the Evil One. She survives the great battle, gives birth, but also knows that the Evil One is still lurking about, looking for opportunities to attack her children once again.
  4. The Sequence today invites us to share in Mary's sorrow, to understand her pain and anguish as she stands at the foot of the cross. It also invites us to trust that we are not alone in our suffering, but that she stands with us even now.
  5. Mary stands at the foot of the cross. It is there that she becomes the sorrowful mother as she watches what is happening to her son, Jesus. It is also there that she becomes our mother as Jesus places her in the hands of her beloved disciple, and as he places his beloved disciple in her hands.
  6. Both St. Gaspar del Bufalo and St. Maria de Mattias has a devotion to the Sorrowful Mother. They lived at a time and place where there was great sorrow and suffering all around them, yet they had hope because of what Jesus had done in the shedding of his blood, and in Mary's concern for all her children. When Jesus established "the new and eternal covenant," Mary became the "Woman of the New Covenant," the mother who encourages, inspirers and strengthen us, the mother who protects her children when the Evil One lurks around them, the mother who never abandons her children, no matter what.  At the cross, she was placed in our hands, we in her loving embrace.
